What is Anti-inflammatory?

The human body may experience inflammatory reactions from time to time. Our body activates inflammation as a defense mechanism when tissues are damaged. However, if this inflammatory reaction is sometimes too severe or continues for a long time, it can cause symptoms such as discomfort and pain. This is where anti-inflammatory drugs come into play and provide relief by preventing the body's inflammatory reaction.

The most commonly used anti-inflammatory medications include drugs such as cortisone, aspirin, and ibuprofen. These medications provide relief by reducing swelling, tenderness, pain and fever that occur due to inflammation in the body. However, these drugs may cause some side effects when used in high doses and for long periods of time.

However, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) also belong to the widely used group of anti-inflammatory drugs. These drugs provide anti-inflammatory effects in high doses, in addition to pain-relieving and antipyretic effects. NSAIDs, unlike steroids, cause fewer side effects. Drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen are among the most well-known members of this drug group.

However, the drugs mentioned include paracetamol (acetaminophen). Paracetamol is not classified as an NSAID because it generally has very little anti-inflammatory effect. However, it is very effective in terms of pain relieving and antipyretic effects.

Many NSAIDs prevent inflammation by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). These inhibitors affect the synthesis of prostaglandins and thromboxanes, leading to anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects. However, NSAIDs, especially drugs such as aspirin, that suppress COX-1 can cause side effects such as gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers.

Anti-inflammatory medications are an effective option for controlling inflammation and relieving the discomfort and pain caused by inflammation. However, it is important to consult your doctor before using any medication. Factors such as dosage and risks of side effects should be taken into account during the use process.

Remember, an accurate evaluation by healthcare professionals will help you determine the best treatment option. We can rely on these inflammation-fighting heroes for a healthy life.
