What is Gastritis? Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Different forms of inflammation of the gastric mucosa can be classified according to the severity of damage to the stomach lining, the location of the inflammation in the stomach, or the type of cells involved in the inflammation. However, gastritis classification does not necessarily indicate the cause of the inflammation.

What are the Types of Gastritis?

The following are the main types of stomach infections:

  1. Erosive gastritis

This type of gastritis is characterized by the presence of ulcers in the stomach lining, and in such cases the damage to the stomach lining is superficial and does not penetrate the muscular layer of the membrane.

  1. Non-erosive gastritis

It is chronic gastritis and the typical feature seen on endoscopic examination is not associated with this type of gastritis. However, they are microscopic changes that occur when examining a sample of the gastric mucosa.

  1. Fundic gland polyps

In this case, inflammation mainly affects the acid-secreting glands located in the body of the stomach and the lower part of the stomach (Stomach fundus), as a result of which a massive glandular atrophy can occur and lead to complete cessation of gastric acid secretion, a condition called achlorhydria.

What are the Symptoms of Gastritis?

Common symptoms of gastritis include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Gas
  • Abdominal pain
  • Indigestion
  • Painful burning sensation in the chest
  • Anorexia
  • dark stool color
  • Presence of blood in vomit

What are the Causes and Risk Factors of Gastritis?

Gastritis has many causes. Here are all these reasons;

The causes of gastritis vary in most cases depending on the type of inflammation. Here are the most important ones:

Causes of erosive gastritis

Causes of erosive gastritis include:

  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory taking medications (NSAIDs)
  • drinking alcoholic beverages
  • psychological trauma
  • Damage caused by radiation exposure
  • Decreased blood flow in the stomach
  • Obstruction in the portal venous system, which is common in chronic liver disease

Cause of non-erosive gastritis

A disease caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacteria that causes various complications

Risk factors

Gastritis occurs as a result of many factors, such as:

  • get an infection
  • Crohn's disease
  • Presence of inflammation associated with too much eosinophilia in the blood
  • Systemic inflammatory diseases such as sarcoidosis
  • Infections caused by taking certain medications that weaken the immune system

What are the Complications of Gastritis?

Complications depend on the type of inflammation:

  • A defect in the absorption of vitamin B12
  • Pernicious anemia in people with low stomach acid
  • Atrophic gastritis, which occurs if chronic gastritis is left untreated

How Is Gastritis Diagnosed?

The disease is diagnosed by the following methods:

  • Endoscopy examination of the stomach to determine the shape of the mucous membrane
  • Sampling of the gastric mucosa
  • Blood test
  • Stool examination

How to Treat Gastritis?

Treatment of gastritis in each case depends on the cause of the inflammation. In many cases, treating gastritis with antacids can help, such as:

  • Histamine H2 receptor blockers
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors – PPIs

How Can Gastritis Be Prevented?

Gastritis can be prevented by following these instructions:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly before eating.
  • Cook food thoroughly to prevent germs.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol.
  • Avoid taking non-steroidal analgesics.
